How the Democrats may lose power in Oregon.

  • Oregon Legislature

Now I am not a political neophyte here folks, but even I am amazed at the hutzpah of the Oregon Legislature’s Democrat leadership. The persistent rumor that they may convene a special session to change the tax increase laws they just passed from being permanently job killing to less damaging “temporary” tax increases just wont go away. This effort would likely be viewed by voters as just another sleazy, underhanded attempt to thwart the will of the people, sort of like when they tried that cute little maneuver during the session called the “yes means no” bill. Don’t these folks ever learn?

If this is actually happens, it could be the game changer that could cause the Dems to lose power in Oregon.

I know this is a bit of a long shot, but remember friends, the same political pundits who say this isn’t possible here today, also said the Contract with America wouldn’t sell either in 1994 and we know how wrong they were then. They arrogantly and totally misjudged the passion of the people in 94, which was much less than it is today in my opinion.

Think back for a bit. Bill and Hillary did a number of things that cost them much political capital in the first two years of their Presidency and it created an enormous backlash which manifested itself in Newt Gingerich’s brilliant strategy and the dramatic change in leadership that followed. Yet, I believe this pales in comparison to what Obama, Pelosi and Reid have done that strikes at the heart of American concepts of freedom. This is being manifested in the form of the incredible outpouring of energy and activism by Americans at tea parties and town hall meetings, many of whom have never been involved in politics before.

The sleeping giant has been awakened and it will lead to a massive political change in America and Oregon.

Now the Democrats still think this is “Astroturf” and are forging ahead with their plans to shove Marxism down our throats. They are just as badly in denial as the Republicans were during the W Presidency and they will be shocked when they lose big in 2010 all over America and here in Oregon.

This national mood against their anti freedom agenda will be compounded here in Oregon if they actually follow through with a special session to stop the signature gathering effort. No amount of spin from their willing allies in the MSM  or union money will be able to counter the incredible backlash against this direction. The business community is genuinely angry at not just the permanent, job killing tax increases the Democrats (and two err rant Republicans) foisted on them, but the arrogant manner in which they were dismissed by the ruling party during the session. They are committed to not playing the game of playing both sides, which is most unusual in my experience. They are choosing sides and will put their resources into play to send a powerful message to the Democrats that they have gone too far.

Couple this with the national mood and it could be the change that Obama promised, only it will not what he wanted.Oregon Democrats should take notice of the President's falling approval ratings, as well as their own.

If they dont and they try the end run around the people with a special session that results in a negation of the tax increase repeal movement, they will pay a very heavy price at election time.
