Taxes / Spending

I told you so: Why MZ 66 will never produce projected revenues.

I love it when I am right (no pun intended) as I am with my predictions on the effects of MZ 66/67. The Oregonian story today http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2010/08/measure_66_tax_revenue_coming.html about MZ 66 revenue tax collections not reaching what they said it would is precisely what myself and many others predicted would happen. However, not for the reasons the article states.

It is because of human nature.

You see the taxpayers that are targeted by this Marxist, class warfare tax increase are angry and upset that they are being demonized by the oppressive socialists in charge of Oregon government. These are entrepreneurs that risk their own capital by starting or expanding a business that creates jobs and frankly, they feel they are being punished for success.

So what do they do?  What most humans do when they feel they are being unfairly treated by others and government. They rebel from this heavy handed tactic and take steps to protect what they have worked for.

The Lesson from the passage of MZ 66 & 67

While digesting the results of the election in which Oregon voters believed the deceptively simple messaging of the union led “Yes” campaign (not to mention the ineffective “No” messages), I realized that Oregon’s economy is going to have to get much worse before the voters wake up.

Deschutes County’s election results make that point clearly.

Here’s why: Deschutes County’s economy is really hurting with an official unemployment rate of 14% and Bend’s economy (the big dog in the county) may not have hit bottom yet as the Oregonian article today http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2010/01/bend_wondering_when_it_will_hi.html describes. Voters there defeated the tax increase measures by 17% and 19%, which means a lot of Democrats voted against them, as R’s only have an 8% voter registration advantage (2,700) in the county. Democrats have been steadily gaining ground and has been voting more liberally as more Californians have moved into the area.

The Oregonian’s rejection of tax increases has leftists in a tizzy.

You know it is bad when the uber liberal Oregonian newspaper editorial board rejects tax increases, even if it is for the wrong reasons. At least they recognize what the socialists don’t, namely that there is a destructive element to permanently raising taxes to during Oregon’s worst recession.

Yet one of the biggest lefty bloggers in Oregon, Steve Novick, is mystified and tied in knots over this stunning revelation  by the state’s biggest and most liberal newspaper. He then goes on a nonsensical rant that only reaffirms that extreme left is out of touch with ordinary Oregonians. In fact, he insults them! http://www.blueoregon.com/2010/01/the-oregonian-editorial-board-and-measures-66-and-67-why-im-reminded-of-friends-who-cling-to-abusive.html

The left doesn’t get business economics and taxes:

It is always instructive to listen to the tortured reasoning of the socialist crowd, which is always trying to reconcile their failed ideas with capitalism. Their arguments miss the basic reason why socialism always fails.

It runs contrary to human nature.

As the income tax increase battle heats up in preparation for the January 26, 2010 vote, the apologists for tax class warfare make convoluted arguments meant to reassure the voting public that there will be no pain associated with voting in favor of higher business taxes. Chuck Sheketoff of the uber liberal Oregon Center of Public Policy (mostly union funded) makes just such arguments from an economic standpoint, even though he isn’t an economist. He seems to say that it is ok to raise taxes because it really isn’t that much and the rich folks can pay more without any negative consequences.

Boy is he ever out of touch with reality.

Why 2 billion in new taxes when Oregon has 5 billion in cash reserves?

Yesterday and today the Oregon House (my alma mater) will have passed 1.2 billion in small business job killing, new taxes, which added to previous tax increases, will bring the grand total to over 2 billion and that doesn’t include 100’s of millions in fee increases either. Yet, the ruling party admits it has nearly 5 billion in cash sitting in state agency checking accounts, but wont tap into any of it, even though they know they can.

Dont buy the lie.

My friends, you will soon be lied to once again by the big government folks who think you are rich and need to give them more of your hard earned money. On Friday, the state will release it’s best guess on the amount of money that will be available for it’s next two year budget and it is likely to be even worse than the last one. You will immediately hear cries of the need for higher taxes and fees to fill the budget hole, but it is a lie and you shouldn’t believe it.

I owe I owe

Well the chickens have come home to roost folks.

You see when you borrow money you become a slave to whomever you borrowed the money from and that is exactly what is happening as Congress irresponsibly continues it's insane spending spree.

Shouldnt life be better in Oregon because massive government spending?

Obama is betting his entire presidency on his message of fear succeeding

President Obama is rolling the dice on his presidency and really putting it all on the line with his desparate attempt to turn the tide of the increasingly negative public opinion about his stimulus package. In fact, he has ratcheted up the rhetoric with his comment today that if this package is not passed, the economy might never recover.

Storm lessons for the Global Warming government crowd:

Well, it seems that our governments here in Oregon were wholly unprepared for the severe ice and snow that we experienced over the last two weeks. Could it be because they have become so convinced that global warming will continue and we will have more mild winters that they will not gear up to effectively deal with these events? How come the Portland International Airport had the highest flight cancellation rate in the nation during this global warming freeze event?
